Hajee Danesh University of Science and Technology former Vice-Chancellor and researcher Prof Md Afzal Hossain got the ‘UGC Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Fellowship-2021”.
A committee headed by University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr Kazi Shahidullah on Wednesday nominated the researcher Prof Afzal for the fellowship.
The commission launched the ‘UGC Bangabandhu Fellowship-2021’ on the occasion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary.
Scrutinizing the applications of a total of nine researchers, the committee selected Prof Afzal Hossain for his research proposal tiled “Exploring the potential of seaweeds for promoting the blue economy of Bangladesh”.
The tenure of the fellowship will be one year from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022. Prof Afzal will get Tk 1,20,000 as honorarium every month. He will also get money for house rent, purchasing education materials, arranging seminar and workshop under the fellowship programme.
In his reaction, Prof Dr. Md. Afzal Hossain said the introduction of the fellowship on the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation is a landmark initiative of the UGC. He thanked UGC for awarding this honorary fellowship.
UGC Chairman Prof Dr Kazi Shahidullah said extensive research is needed to take advantage of the blue economy which is a new horizon of economy.
He said “If we can use of the potential of Blue Economy, than, the country’s unemployment will be eliminated while the economy will be dynamic and it will be easier to build a developed country by 2041.”
The UGC chairman expressed his hopel that Prof Afzal Hossain will be able to give a new perspective on the aspect of the country’s blue economy.
UGC Chairman also said the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had established the UGC aiming to make a developed Bangladesh.
“The fellowship has been introduced to commemorate the contribution of the Father of the Nation in the higher education of the country,” he added.
